What goes up must come down

May 25, 2007

Today, construction of the ‘down’ incline was tackled. This will return the branchline from the upper level back down to ‘Dalesmouth’, crossing itself on the way.

I built the ‘down’ incline in front of the ‘up’ incline at the water tank end first, then continued the slope around the corner.

The incline then meanders to the point at which the descent begins. This is where the descending branchline crosses itself at the beginning of its ascent.

Finally, both the ‘up’ incline and ‘down’ incline were fitted with MDF trackbed.
If you've got the inclination

On the opposite side to ‘Dales Peak’ is where the branchline will run under itself and begin climbing up to ‘Dales Peak’. This ‘up’ incline was begun today and runs at the back of the layout.

White out

May 19, 2007

Two jobs undertaken today.

Firstly, giving the roof beams and the backscene boards a coat of white paint. On the backscenes this will provide a key for future colour. Painting the beams will help reflect more light and hopefully make them less conspicuous.

The second job has been to construct the ‘up’ incline in front of the water tank. The inclines are built to a gradient of 1 in 30. The intention is that both inclines, ‘up’ and ‘down’, will be hidden from sight here, behind scenery.

Camouflaging a tank

No, I’ve not given up and returned to military modelling. It’s just time to get rid of the unsightly water tank. A quick frame of 2x1" and some MDF and hey presto.

Turning the corner

May 9, 2007

Having laid the foundations for ‘Dales Peak Cement Works’, I have now started to put down the baseboard tops just around the corner. This will be the site of ‘Dalesmouth’ station with ‘Overdale Quarry’ above it on the higher level.

The backscene board was extended first, curving around the pipework.

Then the corner baseboards were laid.

Today saw the baseboards extend at the front of the loft. This is where ‘Dales Peak Cement Works’ will be sited on the uppermost level. The lower middleground and foreground will be taken up by the returning branchline and the double mainline respectively. See the Trackplan.

Starting at the back, the upper level is under construction.

Next the middleground with the returning branchline was built. The buildings are put in place to get an idea of scale. They will not be their final positions. Both buildings are from the Walthers Cornerstone Series and were bought on-line from Mac’s Model Railroading.

Finally, the double mainline climbs slightly in the foreground on its way up to ‘Dalesmouth’.
